F.A.Q
Q. What is a paint correction and its process ?
A. paint correction -The removal of light scratches, swirls, chemical and natural etchings, textured paint surfaces and other imperfections from a cars paintwork. Where possible, cars are restored to there factory condition.
After some time your cars paint will develop a ''spider webbing'' appearance in direct/Intense light, more dramatically in darker paints and can ruin your cars reflections and clarity. These are the cars that would benefit from a paint correction in every way.
Paint corrections involve a process that will remove a extremely thin layer in microns (000.1 inch) from your top layer of lacquer (commonly known as ''clear coat''). Older cars have a different type of paint which keeping things simple has its ''Clear coat '' mixed in with its colour and applied in a single stage application (AKA single stage paint). Newer cars have there paint applied in two stages (2 stage paint), base coat first (the cars colour) and then its clear coat (lacquer).
From this process many and if not all scratches will be removed, deeper scratches will be wet sanded out if and where possible. Swirls will be between 90 and 100% removed (as most cases). Bird dropping etches could require wet sanding in aged and extreme cases. On rare occasions they penetrate the clear coat too deep and past the point of no return.
Any past body shop imperfections and errors found will be fixed that fall within the cars paint depth boundary.
Cars that are going to undertake a paint correction will be undertaking a decontamination process to ensure best polishing and correction results.
Q. What is a paint decontamination and its process?
A. Paint Decontamination -The removal of road tar, tree sap, paint over spray (in some cases) and industrial fallout / pollution that has chemically bonded with your cars paint, which inevitably will downgrade your reflection and sterile appearance.
Everyday your cars paint is subjected to the harsh elements that this planet has to offer, the car its self is its own worst enemy from its brake dust , exhaust emissions and soot deposits on rear bumpers on modded / sports cars.
Removing all of this from the cars paint requires many different procedures from claying the surface (a piece of clay with lubrication is used to remove some of the lesser contaminates) or chemical cleaning.
in extreme cases the surface has to be wet sanded to remove all contaminates ( common with older used white cars).
The word '' Decontamination to me is a very broad word and as said can quickly turn into a long day if judged wrong, for example white and lighter coloured cars are by far the most challenging to bring sterile prior to its LSP
(Last stage protection). Most often than not i have to wet sand these types of cars exterior surface with a fine sanding disc (p3000/ p4000) and then polish up to release the factory white or said colour ,which now has placed the detail into the correction category.
Q. What is a ceramic coating?
A . Silicon dioxide product that is installed on to your cars exterior surface to provide a sacrificial barrier that will help protect your cars exterior against the harsh elements , help with maintenance, and keep that ''new look'' for longer.
Ceramic coatings are the new wax in simple terms , although there is still a place for a wax .
Ceramic coatings ( aka Glass coat, crystal coating,si02 coating.) provide more protection than a standard wax and sealants and don't require any re- applications (subjective to body work ect ) spray sealants can be used to prolong its lifespan .
Coatings have a bond with your cars paint and provide a sacrificial barrier against many of the contributing factors that diminish a cars paint and appearance making the wash regime easier and faster, while retaining that as 'new'' look.
Lifespans for a typical coating range from 2- 5 years but this is based on a strict wash regime and aftercare.
Cars that will be put through heavy use and daily motorway miles, low maintenance will all pay its part in diminishing a cars coating capability's Vs a car that will see less miles and great aftercare could possibly push the limit to longer than 2 years and so on , so base your coatings lifespan with the life the car is going to have , if the label says 2 years then that will mean when maintained at its best.
Most coating brands over sell there coating products ,claiming they will stop intentional key damage and other very far fetched claims of throwing a set of car keys at the cars paint work and best of all throwing gloss paint on the said car.. This is not the case. They will however prolong and protect against , wash swirls, contaminates bonding, UV clear coat penetration, extreme wash chemicals ph2 -12 , bird droppings ( but still needs addressing ASAP) and help retain its gloss content.
Q. Ceramic or Wax ?
A. One thing i get asked a lot is should i have it coated or waxed ? To me this is down to many factors , for example the show car/ competition car people i normally advise against a coating , this might seem counter productive but most of the time they are constantly being changed around and always have a detail before they go into a competition anyway and would loose the coating on the first sitting, once a coating is on any issues that turn up can not be polished out with out affecting that coated area. so wax is a more suited suggestion only. ive won multiple 1st place awards for my ''competition ready'' details ( see show car section).
if on the other hand you have a very busy life with limited free time a ceramic coating will help you free time up by eliminating the need to polish and wax your car , speeding up the maintenance process.
I strongly recommend new registered cars to have a ceramic coating installed while the car is already at its best , thus ''coating ready'' ( respectively ) meaning less hours of preparation charges.
